Consequences of MDB File Corruption and Access Database Recovery

Microsoft Access is a powerful database management system that uses Microsoft Jet as its default data storage engine. It encapsulates object-oriented programming capabilities and various software development tools for developing various client-server applications. Access database may get corrupt due to reasons, such as virus infection, multi-user access, application errors, inefficient database design etc. As a consequence, you lose access to all the vital database components and face a critical data loss situation. To overcome the problem, you need to go for Access Repair through a reliable third-party utility.

For instance, when you try to open a MS Access database file, you may receive the following error message on your screen:

"The database needs to be repaired or isn't a database file.
You or another user may have unexpectedly quit Microsoft Office Access while a Microsoft Office Access database was open.

Do you want Microsoft Office Access to attempt to repair the database?"

After clicking 'Yes', Access performs a repair operation on the database. If it fails in its attempt to repair the database, it displays the following error:
"Unrecognized database format 'filename.mdb'"

Cause:

The above errors are caused due to Access database corruption. Corruption occurred because multiple users were accessing the file at the same time and one user abruptly closed the application while the file was open on other systems. Other reasons for corruption could be virus attack, application malfunction, improper system shutdown etc.

This would prevent you from accessing the valuable information stored in your database. You can use a backup for restoring all the lost data. If the backup is missing, follow the below mentioned resolution steps to repair Access file.

Resolution:

Try the following procedure to resolve the problem-

Create a MDB file.
Import all the components of the corrupt database to this newly created Access database.
Use 'Compact and Repair' utility to repair the components in the new database file.

Restart MS Access and open the repaired DB file.

If the problem still persists, you should take help of an efficient Access database repair tool. These tools help you easily recover all the damaged Access database objects, such as tables, indexes, forms, reports, macros etc. They are capable of recovering password-protected VBA code from MS Access forms and modules.
